The big day has finally come, your Camino skylight has been installed and it is time to soak up the sun rays underneath it. Looking up at it, how exciting to think how this patch of sky showing through your ceiling will brighten your home and give it a fresh, new style.

Of course, eventually, the not-so-exciting part is how you will clean it, maintain it and keep it looking brand new? While it’s no secret that Camino skylights are built to last, we still have a few tips and tricks to share with you for maintaining your skylights and keeping them looking their very best.

Follow our installation guide

We have over 25 years of experience and have used it to make sure you don’t encounter the problems that we have. This is why we have used all of our experience and created a simple 3-step guide, which is easy to follow by both professionals or DIY enthusiasts. It will help keep the glass clean by allowing rainwater to naturally run off.

Cleaning the inside

Whatever you do, good old-fashioned cleaning is your best friend.

Follow these 6 steps to clean the interior of your skylight

  1. Gather the following items: long mop or extension rod (long enough to reach the skylight), cloth(s), microfiber towel for dying, bucket, electric tape, rubber bands, dish soap, rubbish bin bags or plastic cover.
  2. Prep the area. Move away or cover nearby furniture and place bin bags on the floor directly under the skylight to catch falling debris. Fill the bucket with approximately 1 litre of warm water. Add a small amount of dish soap and swish to mix. Secure a dry rag to the end of a mop handle or extension rod. (For stubborn grime or grease, add ¼ to ½ cup of white vinegar to the bucket.)
  3. Sweep first. Use the dry rag tool to gently sweep away cobwebs and excess dust and debris.
  4. Gently wash. Remove the soiled cloth from the pole, and replace with a fresh one. Dip the cloth-covered end of the pole into the bucket, wring excess water, and begin washing at the top, left corner of the pane. Work horizontally back and forth, then vertically, covering the entire skylight. Use a circular motion for stubborn dirt.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Once the pane is clean, empty and rinse the bucket and refill with fresh, clear water. Remove the rag from the pole and secure a clean rag. Dip in clear water and wipe the entire surface of the skylight pane. You may want to go over it with clear water a second time to avoid leaving soap residue behind.
  6. Dry to minimize streaking. Remove the rinse rag and secure the dry towel or cloth to the pole. Use side-to-side motions, vertically and horizontally, to remove excess water from the pane.

Cleaning the outside

When it comes to cleaning the outside surface of your skylight, your best – and safest – option is to hire a professional. Although you may be able to use a pressure washer to do the job from the safety of the ground, using the correct pressure can be tricky. A setting that is too high may damage the roof or the skylight.

If you choose to attempt the job yourself, you will need a ladder or scaffolding to reach the skylight. Use extreme caution when working from height and avoid overreaching and keep your feet firmly planted as you work. (You may be able to avoid climbing on the roof by using your handy extension pole, though, depending on where the skylight is located.) Use the same steps as above to clean the skylight’s exterior.

All our skylights come with an easy-clean coating as standard to ensure you don’t have to worry about cleaning them every couple weeks. This does not mean the glass should never be cleaned. It reduces the frequency at which they should be cleaned. We at Camino recommend cleaning the external part of the skylight at least once a year and the internal part at least twice a year.
