If you’re confused about the various terms ‘roof light,’ ‘skylight’ or ‘roof window’, and what is best in your case, then don’t worry. You wouldn’t be the first person to be confused by it. The fact is, there is little or no difference between the meanings of the different terms. It has just happened that, over time, these different terms have become popular alternatives for what is essentially the same thing.

Skylights and rooflights are both available in frameless designs, which means you only see glass when looking up at the unit from indoors. All you need to do in order to have a skylight on your roof is to build an upstand where the glass can sit.

The main reason that you’ll be finding a mix of the two across many glazing websites is due to search purposes; companies often use the terms ‘skylight’ and ‘rooflight’ within their content to make sure that regardless of the terminology a potential customer is using, they will be guided to the correct page.

However, skylights and rooflights should not be confused with the term Roof-Window.

Roof windows are inward or outward opening windows, which tend to be integrated into the roof’s design. They tend to be made out of aluminium frames and are quite often integrated into curtain walling systems. Roof windows have to be installed at a minimum of 15 degrees pitch.

Whatever term you prefer using, remember that ‘rooflight’ and ‘skylight’ mean the same thing whereas ‘roof window’ should be treated as a slightly different product. Despite these differences, all three share the ability to drastically improve the quality of lighting within any given room or living space.
